چکیده

Phylogenetic comparative methods are increasingly used to give new insights into the dynamics of trait evolution in deep time. For continuous traits the core of these methods is a suite of models that attempt to capture evolutionary patterns by extending the Brownian constant variance model. However, the properties of these models are often poorly understood, which can lead to the misinterpretation of results. Here we focus on one of these models - the Ornstein Uhlenbeck (OU) model. We show that the OU model is frequently incorrectly favoured over simpler models when using Likelihood ratio tests, and that many studies fitting this model use datasets that are small and prone to this problem. We also show that very small amounts of error in datasets can have profound effects on the inferences derived from OU models. Our results suggest that simulating fitted models and comparing with empirical results is critical when fitting OU and other extensions of the Brownian model. We conclude by making recommendations for best practice in fitting OU models in phylogenetic comparative analyses, and for interpreting the parameters of the OU model.

A Statistical Study of two Diffusion Processes on Torus and Their Applications

Diffusion Processes such as Brownian motions and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are the classes of stochastic processes that have been investigated by researchers in various disciplines including biological sciences. It is usually assumed that the outcomes of these processes are laid on the Euclidean spaces. However, some data in physical, chemical and biological phenomena indicate that they cann...

A note about conditional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes

In this short note, the identity in law, which was obtained by P. Salminen [6], between on one hand, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with parameter γ, killed when it reaches 0, and on the other hand, the 3-dimensional radial Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process killed exponentially at rate γ and conditioned to hit 0, is derived from a simple absolute continuity relationship.

Tempo and mode of performance evolution across multiple independent origins of adhesive toe pads in lizards.

Understanding macroevolutionary dynamics of trait evolution is an important endeavor in evolutionary biology. Ecological opportunity can liberate a trait as it diversifies through trait space, while genetic and selective constraints can limit diversification. While many studies have examined the dynamics of morphological traits, diverse morphological traits may yield the same or similar perform...

Properties of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck bridge

This note is a study of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck bridge and its main properties. We present the derivation of its canonical decomposition in the first section of the paper using filtration enlargement techniques. In the second section, we present its Karhunen-Loève expansion, for any value of the initial variance and mean-reversion parameter (or mean-repulsion if negative). In the third section, ...

Ornstein–Uhlenbeck related models driven by Lévy processes

Recently, there has been increasing interest in continuous-time stochastic models with jumps, a class of models which has applications in the fields of finance, insurance mathematics and storage theory, to name just a few. In this chapter we shall collect known results about a prominent class of these continuoustime models with jumps, namely the class of Lévy-driven Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes...
